Five brothers and cousins sit closely together in a relaxed studio setting, smiling and leaning into each other with arms around shoulders. The group includes older teenage boys and a younger child, all showing a natural bond and connection. The soft neutral background and gentle lighting highlight their expressions, creating a warm, candid family portrait captured at a Harlow, Essex photography studio.

Extended family sessions are always a little bit magical, and a little bit chaotic in the best possible way.

This recent session at my Harlow photography studio brought together twelve family members, all in one space, all full of energy, laughter, and personality. And honestly, I loved every second of it.

A Full Studio, A Lot of Energy, and So Many Moments

As soon as everyone arrived at my studio in Moot House, Harlow, Essex, the energy was instant.

Children running around, parents trying to organise everyone, siblings teasing each other, and laughter coming from every corner of the room. It might sound like chaos, but this is exactly where the magic happens.

I always say, you do not need perfect behaviour for beautiful photos. You just need connection.

From Organised Group Shots to Natural, Candid Moments

Of course, we started with some of those all-important group photos. With twelve people, it takes a little bit of organising, a bit of patience, and a lot of encouragement.

But once those were done, everything relaxed.

The best moments came naturally, siblings pulling faces at each other, little ones sneaking in cuddles, bursts of laughter that no one could quite contain. These are the moments I am always watching for.

Not forced smiles, not stiff poses, just real family connection.

Taking It Outside, Letting Everyone Breathe

After the studio shots, we headed out into the garden space around the studio, and everything shifted again.

The natural light was perfect, soft and flattering, and the space gave everyone room to move, breathe, and just be themselves.

The children ran around, the adults relaxed into the moment, and suddenly it did not feel like a photoshoot at all. It just felt like a family spending time together.

And that is always when the best photos happen.

Why Extended Family Sessions Are So Special

Extended family sessions are about so much more than getting everyone in one photo.

They capture:

  • Generations together

  • Relationships between siblings, cousins, grandparents

  • The chaos, the laughter, the in-between moments

  • The way your family feels right now

These are the photos that become more meaningful over time, because they hold so many connections in a single frame.

The Perfectly Imperfect Moments Matter Most

Looking back through this session, it was not the perfectly posed images that stood out the most.

It was the laughter, the playful nudges, the hugs that happened without anyone asking, the moments in between where everyone forgot about the camera.

That is what makes a family session special.

Not perfection, but real life, captured in a way you can hold onto.
